Route Halifax-St. Pierre 2008
 
 
The Route Halifax - Saint-Pierre race 2008 is a world class ocean race held every two years (opposite the Marblehead - Halifax race) from Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada to Saint-Pierre, France off of beautiful coastal Newfoundland.
 
The first start will be on July 13 2008 with division II which are yachts racing non spinnaker (cruising class).  July 14 will be the start for Division I, which is full racing sails both in IRC and PHRF classes.  
     -Division One (full racing sails IRC and PHRF classes)
     -Division Two, which is for yachts racing "non spinnaker" - cruising canvas class
     -The starts will take place on the Halifax Waterfront off the stern of HMCS Sacville.
     -Both divisions will race directly to Saint-Pierre which usually takes 2 - 3 days.

Race and cruise the spectacular waters of Nova Scotia and Saint Pierre.  Visit the historic seaports of Louisburg, Halifax and Lunenburg.  Stay and rest a while in the protected waters of the graceful Mahone Bay.  Stroll through the colorful town of Mahone Bay, and drop in on the classic boat festival.  Have lunch in the seaside village of Chester, have a corn boil on Beckman’s Island, flash up your bar-b-que in one of the many hidden treasure coves on the Bras d’or Lakes on Cape Breton Island and watch the American bald eagles soar.  Go back in time while visiting the rustic and rugged south west coast of Newfoundland.
 
From the beginning to end, this 360 mile ocean race from Halifax, Nova Scotia to the French island of Saint Pierre will be a challenge for the adventurous and a delight for the pleasure seekers.
 
2008, our 4th edition of the Route Halifax Saint Pierre begins on July 13 with the white sail and July 14 with racing class, in Halifax Harbor.
 
Planning is well underway to make this a memorable adventure.  Our race organizers are keen ocean racers and blue water cruisers like yourself.  Our committee is made up of members from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Chester Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Armdale Yacht Club, Dartmouth Yacht Club and Yacht Club de Saint Pierre.

The Bluenose II
The Route HSP Committee is pleased to announce the participation of the Bluenose II in the post
race festivities.  Bluenose II is anticipated to arrive in Saint-Pierre on July 17th and will continue
her official port visit until after the Grand Prix Yacht Race in Saint Pierre harbor July 19th.
 
 
The Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race
The Marblehead-to-Halifax race is a 360-nautical mile course from Marblehead to Halifax
and is open to all qualifying yachts in five divisions. The race announcement and additional
details can be seen on the MHOR web site.
 
 
 
Navy to accompany the Route HSP fleet.
Naval Headquarters in Halifax has announced that  HMCS Kingston, one of its Kingston Class Coastal Defence Vessels will be at sea to accompany the race to Saint Pierre. She will also make a port visit in Saint Pierre. The Navy has generously provided one or two ships to accompany each of our races since the event was first run in 2002. Racers have always appreciated the presence and support of the Navy as they cross the challenging waters off the east coast.
 
 
The excitement is building – the festivities are being planned. The 2008 Route Halifax Saint-Pierre is developing into one of the most exciting to date. There’s still time to gather your crew, prepare your boat and register for what will prove to be THE ocean race of 2008. 
 
The post race activities on the island of Saint-Pierre are sure to make even the most difficult racing conditions well worth the effort.
The boats are expected to start arriving on July 16 where there will be an on-the-jetty banyan and welcome party.  In true French hospitality sailors are greeted by their local host and the friendly Saint-Pierre officials to clear customs and get the party started.
 
On 18 July, crews will be invited to participate in the Sailor’s Parade through the picturesque town to the Mayor’s office where the traditional tree-planting ceremony and reception follow. In the evening there will be a celebration including a barbeque and dance, open to not just the sailors, but the whole community.
On 19 July there is the Grand Prix Race (inshore) in which RHSP boats will compete against each other yet again. The Awards Ceremony and Dinner follow that evening with prize presentations and the best food and wine Saint-Pierre has to offer.

Rejoignez la Route Halifax Saint-Pierre en 2008 la course de votre vie 
*  La course jusque Saint-Pierre se répartit en deux divisions. 
*   La réunion des skippers pour les deux divisions se tiendra au RNSYS
*  La course (pour toutes les classes et divisions) débutera le 14 Juillet 2008.
. La Division Un (Racing avec spinnaker – classes IRC et PHRF) prendra son départ sur le front de mer du centre ville d’Halifax tout comme la Division Deux réservée aux voiliers qui régatent avec leurs « voiles blanches » (sans spinnaker) selon un format croisière. Une classe en double sera créée selon la demande.
. Les départs seront donnés sur le front de mer du centre ville d’Halifax à un endroit restant à déterminer. Les deux Divisions régateront directement d’Halifax à Saint-Pierre où les voiliers devraient arriver environ deux à trois jours après le départ.
 
Les activités terrestres sur Saint-Pierre garantissent de vous faire oublier les pires conditions de navigation. Les bateaux sont prévus arriver vers le 16 Juillet où un acceuil individuel leur sera réservé et une fête organisée. Le 18 Juillet, les concurrents seront conviés à la Parade des Navigateurs suivie de la remise d’un arbre symbolique au Maire de Saint-Pierre et d’une réception. Le soir même,  une autre fête est au calendrier avec barbecue, rafraichissements et musique live en compagnie des équipgaes mais aussi de la population locale. Le 19 Juillet une régate côtière sous l’appelation de « Grand Prix » sera organisée pour l’ensemble de la flotte. Ce Grand Prix sera suivi d’une autre réception, de la remise des prix et d’un diner pour tout les équipages et bénévoles.
